The Mariinsky Ballet at the Teatre Liceu

The Mariinsky Ballet

There is something distinctively festive about ballets – all that plush white tulle against an inky black stage, the porcelain ballerinas floating in mid-air like delicate snowflakes. Restore the rosiness to your cheeks this winter with an opulent ballet by the world-famous Russian Mariinsky School at the stunning Liceu Teatre.

Beefeater In-Edit festival

in-edit

The Beefeater In-Edit festival has finally returned to Barcelona for its ninth edition, opening our eyes and ears to the world of music documentaries between 27th October and 6th November. In the arena for the opening ceremony are both music heavyweights and the creator of the Music Documentary genre, Michael Nyman – all expected to pack a strong punch at the 2011 event.

Barcelona’s ghoulish ghost tours

spooky
It is a dark, damp October evening, the air lies heavy with fog and I find myself loitering nervously on the Plaça Reial for a man I have been previously acquainted with only by name. Nervously, because this is exactly the sort of climatic condition and location for the set of a classical horror movie (Ancient, labyrinth-esque alleyways? Check. Isolated, gloomy and cold? Check. They didn’t film Perfume here for nothing…). And with a name like Tyler McGee, I’m not entirely convinced that a spritely, clover-clad Irishman jubilantly guiding me through the Gothic quarter (as he clarifies the nuances of eighth century witchcraft and bloodshed) would be up to the job.

A gory film fest at the Antic Teatre

antic teatre
This Halloween prepare yourselves for short, sharp bursts of gore, blood and guts in the shape of a locally-produced, low budget cortometraje (short film) festival at the Antic Teatre. Straddling the Gotic/Borne district, the Antic Teatre is a hidden gem of cultured performance-art shows, and is one of the few real “creation” hubs in the centre of the city with an in-house theatre.

…how do you like your halloween?

it's that time again...
Until a few weeks ago it may still have been possible to cling onto the last slivers of late summer warmth but we can no longer deny Autumn’s golden glow. With dark winter nights looming ahead of us, it’s the perfect time to think about one of our most exciting festive knees-ups: Halloween on 31st October.

El día de los muertos, Mexican style

...the never-ending mexican obsession with skulls continues
“For an inhabitant of New York, Paris or London, death is a word that is never spoken, because it burns the lips. The Mexican however is on good terms with her, sleeps with her, courts her; she is one of his favourite playthings and his most lasting love.”
Octavio Paz. The solitary labyrinth, 1961

Rekons, an ode to pies

PIEOne of the most enjoyable parts of this time of year is the urge to start battening down the hatches and plumping for hearty, warming dishes – comfort food that warms the cockles and melts the heart; chicken soup for the soul.

48h openhousebcn: opening doors

openhouseBarcelona has long been known for its varied pastiche of architectural offerings. Modernist prodigies rub shoulders with roman relics, art nouveau sidles up to poker-faced gothic basilicas – even taking a stroll through Eixample and the old quarter will guide you through a rich tapestry of design and styles.

CAELUM : temptations from the monastery?

sinful delights

In Latin, CAELUM is translated as heaven. Indeed even before walking inside, the bijou, lacy window displays are a cacophony of heavenly treats…pillowy sponge-cakes, celestial meringues and sinful chocolate brownies, all devotedly made by naughty nuns across the length and breadth of Spain.

yumIt’s that time of year again. Slowly adding more layers to our flimsy summer clothes, the atmosphere is mellowing with the onset of Autumn and now is the time to consider making provisions for the chillier months ahead.
